Post-Pandemic Marketing Analysis
Black Rifle Coffee Company is a veteran- founded coffee and beverage company that has built its marketing strategy around coffee and community. It brings in military and veteran connections and a strong sense of American symbolism. Founded in 2014 by U.S. Army veteran Evan Hafer, the company has grown from a small coffee roasting company into a nationally distributed brand. To date, they have decided to sell to wholesale retailers; they also use a direct-to-consumer website and their outpost coffee shops. They also utilize their own social media and content to build awareness and maintain relationships with the veteran community and customers.
One of Black Rifle Coffee Company's biggest strengths is their ability to connect emotionally with their customers. Instead of just marketing the coffee and beverages, they connect with people's lifestyles and communities. The veteran-founded identity and support for veterans, active-duty military, firefighters, and first responders give customers more reasons to purchase and support them. In the post-pandemic marketplace, customers look for companies with values, personality, and a sense of community rather than just a product.
Black Rifle Coffee Company also has weaknesses that marketers need to consider. Its strong brand identity can be both a strength and a weakness. The military and patriotic themes create loyalty among its following. If new prospective customers are searching for a new coffee brand and see it's very patriotic, they may feel it's not for them. The company relies too heavily on its existing customer base, which it needs to avoid. Another concern is the decline in direct-to-consumer sales. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) noted a decline from 2024 to 2025. The DTC sales went from $123.8 million to $117.6 million. With a loss that large, a company should reconsider its approach to customers.
The largest challenges facing Black Rifle Coffee Company are competition, changing consumer preferences, and connecting with a broader audience without losing the loyalty of its current customers. The coffee and beverage industries are highly competitive, with larger companies like Starbucks, Nestle, Dr. Pepper, and Pepsi competing for shelf space and marketing attention. Black Rifle Coffee recognizes that larger competitors have financial, marketing, and distribution resources to their advantage. Black Rifle Coffee also understands it must continue to provide high-quality products and keep its brand relevant, as consumers have many options.
To overcome these challenges, I think marketers should focus on digital engagement and product innovation. The company already has a major advantage because it has its own media and content creators. They can use that content to promote new products and tell the stories behind them. They can also highlight veterans and first responders who become their customers. The company can also use its Coffee Club to personalize recommendations based on customers' preferences. They can also continue efforts to gain more shelf space in grocery and convenience stores for consumers who do not regularly shop online. The company's recent growth shows it has more potential to use this strategy.
Personally, I would like to see Black Rifle Coffee Company build more connections with consumers by expanding its marketing to show that it's a product that can be enjoyed by more than just veterans and the communities that surround them, but by people from a variety of backgrounds. As a veteran myself, I don't think they should get rid of the veteran-focused mission because that is one of their biggest strengths. The veteran community speaks of them daily, especially if there is one near your base; a lot of Army bases now have one nearby. Instead, they can simply show more diversity in the types of customers who drink their coffee. They can run campaigns around schools, workplaces, travelers, and outdoor events to spend quality time together with coffee. This is the portion of the SWOT analysis known as an opportunity because it reaches a new audience and would support the company's goals while preserving its current customers.
